Adopt a Bed or Flower Container
In the spring of each year, sign up to adopt a flower bed in either downtown Kalamazoo or Portage. Tend to your bed once a week throughout the summer (end of May through end of September). Responsibilities include weeding, deadheading and removing litter. Going on vacation for a week? No problem, let the gardener know and they'll care for it until you return. All bed adopters will receive a Kalamazoo in Bloom shirt to identify you as a volunteer while working in your bed.
Volunteer
Community involvement is needed to plant and maintain flowerbeds throughout Kalamazoo and Portage. Through our many partnerships, over 200 volunteers of all ages help us carry out this mission. All volunteers receive a Kalamazoo in Bloom t-shirt for their help on the two community-wide planting days. The following are opportunities to get involved and help our community thrive with beauty:
Planting Day KIB Ambassador is responsible for overseeing the planting of a bed to ensure it is planted according to the design.
Volunteer on planting days. There are several volunteer opportunities in May of each year to help transform public spaces in downtown Kalamazoo and Portage into vibrant and welcoming locations. We look forward to working with returning volunteers and welcome new ones. Join us in the amazing process. No gardening experience necessary.
Sponsorship Opportunities
Flower Bed Sponsorship
Gifts of $350 or more to sponsor a bed in Kalamazoo or Portage help Kalamazoo in Bloom purchase thousands of flowers that are planted in these communities. Flower beds may also be sponsored in memory or honor of a friend or loved one. For your sponsorship, your name will appear on a flower bed sign all summer long.
Topiary Sponsorship
A preview of the animals available for sponsorship takes place at the Pumpkin Soiree fundraiser in November. Guests have their first chance to sponsor their favorite animal. Any animal topiaries left to sponsor will be available on a first-come-first-served basis at the beginning of the new year. This is a unique way to recognize a loved one or to promote your business all summer long in Kalamazoo and Portage.
